Background Story

Upon the sands of the dry riverbed of the Runde River at Gonarezhou, Zimbabwe, beneath the Chilojo Cliffs, I am gifted with an oval stone, worn smooth by hand and water.  It is a grandmother stone.  For grinding grain.  For rubbing over the body.  For healing, kneading, softening, soothing.

I sit upon the earth from which this stone belongs as night falls - and see the grandmothers, daughters and women sitting, held in soft light of fire and flame, shadows playing on the rock walls upon which they rest - laughing, speaking of events of day, cradling babies, tending children.

Our eyes meet, her eyes shining dark filled with light.

I see you she says.  I see you seeing me. Through time and space we meet here in the distant past.  Remember me and know I am still here.
